We visit different countries every year. 2006 was a very successful tour, selling-out with 22 students, visiting Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, and France. At the end of our tour, many of us stayed longer and traveled to Britain, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, etc. 2007 took us to Ireland, Scotland, and England. After each trip, we published a collaborative book of our work.
We are taking deposits now, so don't wait.
If you need Financial Aid, see the Cost page, above.
This trip is designed to give participants college credit for three or more photography courses (7+ units). We will meet in May for pre-travel photographic discussions, lectures, and assignments. We will travel through Greece for 5 days, then on to northern Italy, visiting both coasts. At this point, you may fly home or choose to explore other cities or countries on your own. Who can enroll in EuroFoto? This tour was designed with the 'serious' photographer in mind, but we certainly encourage anyone interested to consider joining us. In past years, we've enjoyed groups comprised of beginning and advanced photo students, retired people / amateur photographers, professional photographers, mother-and-daughters, couples, art and film majors, foreign language majors, and even point-n-shooters who simply liked our itinerary and wanted to hang-out with a group of photographers. Read more... or send an email to ask questions.
We will discuss and study units on film vs. digital, film and camera selection, lenses, tripods, night shooting, infrared, color, black and white, environmental portraiture, landscape, and much more. Upon our return to San Diego, you will have the opportunity to spend several weeks printing in black and white or digital back on-campus in the darkroom and digital lab. The culmination of the classes will be portfolios ready for exhibition.
The final itinerary and cost could change slightly, somewhat contingent upon the size of the group and how soon everyone gets involved. The sooner we finalize our travel "group", the lower the cost, mostly due to potential airfare hikes for (peak) Summer travel. Also, those who enroll early will have a greater vote on final itinerary items. The info published today could change slightly. We will keep all participants up-dated and try to keep this website as up-to-date as possible. Email will be used frequently to keep in contact with the group in the months before departure... and afterward to keep everyone informed of all pertinent information.
This is shaping-up to be one of our most ambitious and rewarding tours. Morning, noon, and night, we will be exploring and photographing large cities, small towns, famous museums, back-alleys, and the people and cultures in all these places. Many days will be planned with group tours and activities in the morning, leaving afternoons and evenings free to explore individually or in small groups. It is the responsibility of each traveler to do your own research to plan how to spend your free time. You will typically have several hours each day to wander, explore, get "lost", and make your own discoveries. Read. Read. Read. Decide, before we leave, what interests you in each area and what YOU want to see. Unlike many European Tours, we will NOT spend the majority of our time staring at the back of a motorcoach headrest while trying to see nine countries in nine days. This adventure has been planned for the photographer, with ample time in most areas to explore the back streets and more. This will allow each of us to bring home a better individual sense of each city or region along with a more representative and in-depth portfolio of the area, its people, sights, surroundings, and our personal and emotional response to each.
This is a photographic adventure. We will not hold your hand each step of the way and tell you "what" to shoot. YOU will decide, much of the time, where to go, what to see, what to photograph, and what to do with your time. As artists / photographers, each of us will want to photograph different things at different times of the day. You will have this freedom. Plan your free time accordingly. Buy a good guide book, search on-line, watch videos, ask questions, and plan your own itinerary for your personal time. This trip may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Don't "waste" your time in your hotel room or sitting in a bar or restaurant. Get out and explore. Get out and SHOOT. When we get home, you may be tired, but you'll be glad you invested your hours in your images... and not a hundred pints of ale.
This is advice... from former students... AFTER they got home.
Virtual Tour?
Anyone who has experienced Google-Earth was probably amazed the first time you "flew" from continent to continent. If you have not yet seen this "mapping" software, you can download it FREE, for Windows or Mac, at http://earth.google.com/.
We expect the 2008 tour to sell out, so if you are interested, we recommend you submit your deposit and application ASAP.
